The Yellow Boat is based on the true story of David and Sonja Saar's son, Benjamin. Benjamin was born with congenital hemophilia and died in 1987 at the age of eight due to AIDS-related complications. David Saar wrote a book, and the subsequent stage play, as an affirmation of a child's life and the strength and courage of children. Benjamin's story is beautiful, heart-breaking, funny, sad, and poignant. It is also incredibly inspiring and a testament to the power of art. It is through art that Benjamin faces the challenges of his journey. He takes to heart the Scandinavian folk tale that includes "the yellow boat" and uses visual art to express his hopes, dreams and feelings. You do not want to miss this very special play.
The show is directed by Kevin Dunaway, produced by Matt Lisa, and stage managed by Jess Bunn. The talented cast includes Taylor Duecker as Benjamin, Charlie Rader as Father, Pia Rader as Mother, Sofie Tedesco as Joy, Spencer Flaherty as Eddy, and Jaycen Smith, Megan Jungkunz, DeCharmus Grover, and RIcha Gupta as multiple characters in the ensemble.

How can it be time to celebrate quarterly birthdays again?
Didn’t we just celebrate in June for the last quarter?
Now it is time to celebrate the July, August, and September Birthdays!
The next Quarterly Birthday Celebration will be Monday, September 26th.
We will be celebrating at Shooters Sports Grill in Liberty Twp - 4981 Winners, Circle Dr, Hamilton, OH 45011. It is accessed off Route 747, north of Butler County Highway Route 129. The number for Shooters is 513-204-0401.
The “celebration” will be at 6:00 PM. Look for Diane Caruso and Terri Beerens around that time to join in the festivities. If you are unable to be there around 6pm, you can dine any time during restaurant hours, which are 11:00 AM to 10:00 PM.
10% of ALL purchases, including alcohol, will be donated to MCP, no matter when you dine.

The Ohio Community Theatre Association's Annual Conference was held Labor Day weekend. Three MCP members were appearing in excerpts that were showcased at the event. Peyton Hahn and Clare Hingsbergen were a part of the cast of Bright Star for The Drama Workshop, which received Excellence in Ensemble for their excerpt. Darren Lee received a Merit in Acting for his portrayal of Bill Livingston in Tri-County Players' excerpt of The Women of Lockerbie.
And, in a well-deserved recognition for his many years of service to OCTA, John Masterson was honored with the 2022 President's Award. John is a part of the Finance Committee for OCTA. He has served as a Regional Rep for Southwest. He has done more than his fair share manning the OCTA Merchandise table at excerpts and conferences raising funds for the organization through their sales initiatives.
It's great to see all of these folks honored, but especially, John, whose contributions to the organization often go unnoticed. This time, he was in the spotlight!
The selections for this year are:
September 28:
Peter and the Starcatchers by Dave Barry and Ridley Pearson, source for the musical Peter and the Starcatcher
October 26:
The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time by Mark Haddon, source for the play of the same name
November 30: Auntie Mame by Patrick Dennis, source for the play of the same name and the musical, Mame.
How many squares have you filled on your MCPGo Card? Do you have your MCPGo card? Well, rumor has it there are going to be some challenges soon. You want to be sure you have yours. Remember, if you did it in 2022, you can count it on your card! Get one here!
Next month will mark the one-year anniversary of the acquisition of Mason Community Playhouse. It is hard to believe that we have come so far already in our hope to make the venue the best theatre experience possible for our audiences and for those who bring shows to life for MCP. As always, MCPers have answered the call to help. Members have spent many Saturdays and Sundays over the last eleven months completing renovation tasks.
The Renovation Committee is reaching out to ask you for two more critical Renovation Days as we reach our one year milestone. Nearly all of the renovation of Phase One on the first floor of the building has been completed. There remains a few projects to be able to close the door on Phase One First Floor. Your help is needed to make that goal a reality.
To that end, there will be just two more Reno Work Days in 2022. Please mark your calendars for Saturday, October 15th, and Saturday, October 22nd, from 10am to 4pm on both days. There will be tasks for all ability and skill levels.
Please make a commitment to one or both days. If you are able to do so today, sign up here on the SignUp Genius page. If you are not sure of your schedule at this point, the link will be available in this newsletter until those Saturdays.
Help the Renovation Team close this chapter before we celebrate our 50th year. There is still work to do on Phase One Second Floor, and that will continue over the course of next year, but finishing the first floor in this phase is a huge accomplishment!
The goal of MCP is to schedule renters in the space as often as possible. We will, of course, give the utmost deference to our own productions, but when the space is available, renting the venue will bring in needed income.
In order to have renters in the space, a trained MCP member will need to be present. Thus MCP is seeking Event Liaisons. This is a person who will be on site when a renter is having rehearsals or performances in the theatre. It does not have to be the same person for all of a given rental's duration. The job would be to keep an eye on the renters, to go through a brief entry and exit checklist with them, noting anything that's wrong, and to ensure that any questions or problems they have are directed to the right person (usually the technical liaison for the show, who may or may not be on site). This job does not require having specific technical knowledge or expertise.
The more members who are trained and able to be present, the less times any one individual needs to be present. It's that "many hands make light work" adage again!
There will be a second training session for interested members on Saturday, September 24th from 3-5pm at the Playhouse. If you are interested, send an e-mail here by September 20th.
Thank you to ...
… Laureen Catlin, Eric Grimm and Becca McLaughlin who did major cleaning in the main lobby, the concessions lobby, the hallway, all of the restrooms, the kitchen and the utility room
… Mary Stan Fizer who placed all of the seating in the performance space for the show, and for keeping up with the mowing of the lawn this week, as well
… Laureen Catlin, Phil Catlin, and Becca McLaughlin who completed the final paint touch-ups
… ALL

MCP's 50 for 50 campaign has begun! It cannot be successful without the support of every member. The campaign's goal is to raise $50,000 by December 31st of our 50th year. That total amount has been divided into five $10,000 goals each focusing on a specific area of venue improvement ... "A Wonderful Life, A Wonderful Town, a Wonderful Exterior," "Kinky Boots, The Full Monty … and the Kitchen Sink," Paint the Town, Paint Your Wagon, Paint our Building," "Defying Gravity" In the Heights ... Give us a lift!" and Catch Me If You Can, "The Cellblock Tango" ... Lock the door and throw away the key!
You can donate now! Just click here! And share the link with every one that you know!
Not a fan of making an online donation? That's okay. You can write a check. Make out a check to Mason Community Players for the amount you would like to donate. Be sure to write "50 for 50" on the memo line. You can hand the check to Treasurer Susan Berger or mail it to P.O. Box 300, Mason, OH 45040.
This is not just a fundraiser designed to solicit donations from members. We want to be able to reach out to the greater community. Is it going to be your birthday soon? Ask your family and friends to donate as a gift to you. Are you friends with a business owner who might be willing to make this one time donation to help us celebrate 50 years? Maybe you are holding out to ask around Christmastime. That's okay. Remember that we are a 501c3 corporation and the gifts are tax deductible.
Can we reach $5,000 before the close of The Yellow Boat? Sure we can, we made $1,100 before the close of Nunsense A-men, which was a much shorter span of time! Our current total is $1,870 from just six supporters. We have only a few days left!
This newsletter will be sent to you each Sunday evening. It is the hope of the leadership of MCP that this will be an easy communication for you to refer to throughout that week and that you will not have as many messages from the group in your inbox over the course of the week. You can always reach out to us at any time with suggestions.
